Carbon footprint for products (PCF)

Your Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)

The Product Carbon Footprint is a climate balance at product level. The PCF includes all emissions caused by a product in the various phases of its life cycle. Five Glaciers Consulting determines the climate impact of your individual products and services. We use customized analyses and methods to identify potential for more climate-friendly production methods.

Challenges in preparing the PCF

There is still no legal obligation to calculate the product carbon footprint. Nevertheless, disclosure is already often a decisive factor in the awarding of a contract: More and more customers are demanding transparency about the climate impact of products. Calculating the PCF is usually very complex and time-consuming, as the entire product life cycle has to be taken into account.

We create your carbon footprint at product level

We create carbon footprints for your company at product level and thus create an important basis of trust for your customer relationships. With proactive transparency regarding your product emissions and potential for improvement, you will become a pioneer in climate protection and sustainability.

PCF calculation as a valuable basis

Calculating and disclosing the carbon footprint of your individual products is a valuable basis not only for your customer acquisition and relationships, but also for the development of your future climate strategy. In addition to the company's overall carbon footprint, it is a concrete foundation on which you can build - also in further cooperation with us.

Frequently asked questions about
Carbon footprint for products (PCF)

What are the advantages of a PCF calculation for companies?

Companies benefit from transparency about the environmental impact of their products, compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g. CBAM, CSRD), the development of market opportunities through sustainable products and the identification of optimization potential in the supply chain.

How detailed must the data for a PCF be?

The level of detail depends on the aim of the analysis. For reliable results, primary data from production (energy consumption, raw materials, waste) should be combined with secondary data (databases such as ecoinvent or GaBi).

Which methods and standards are used for the PCF calculation?

Common standards are ISO 14067, the GHG Protocol Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard and EN 15804 for construction products. These define the methodology for recording and calculating emissions along the product life cycle.

What is the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) and how does it differ from the CCF?

The PCF calculates the greenhouse gas emissions generated during the entire life cycle of a product - from the extraction of raw materials to production, use and disposal. In contrast, the Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) considers the entire company and all associated activities.

Why is the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) relevant for the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)?

CBAM, the EU's CO₂ border tax, requires importers to provide evidence of the emissions-based carbon footprint of products. A PCF helps to verifiably document emissions and minimize potential customs costs due to CO₂ emissions.

How does an LCA differ from a PCF?

While a PCF only considers the climate impact (CO₂ equivalents), an LCA analyzes a variety of environmental aspects, including water scarcity, ozone depletion or toxicity. An LCA is therefore more comprehensive and offers a holistic environmental assessment.
