Life cycle assessment (LCA)

Your life cycle assessment (LCA)

Life cycle assessment (LCA) provides a systematic analysis of all the environmental impacts of products and services. It therefore goes beyond the climate-focused Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) and creates the basis for any sustainability or CSR strategy in the company.

Five Glaciers Consulting prepares ISO 14040/44-compliant life cycle assessments for companies. Our analyses cover the entire life cycle of products and services: from raw material extraction through production and use to disposal. This reveals hotspots, identifies potential savings and prepares valuable data for future decisions!

The challenges of life cycle assessment

Creating a comprehensive life cycle assessment is not trivial. Since as many environmental impacts of a product or service as possible should be taken into account, even defining the scope and the subsequent data compilation are a challenge.

We create the overview!

We compile a systematic life cycle assessment for your company and maintain an overview. Using targeted and project-proven methodologies, we ensure that all relevant processes, procedures and life cycle-relevant factors are taken into account in the assessment.

The life cycle assessment as a valuable basis

The aim of life cycle assessment for companies is not only to collect and process data, but above all to facilitate decision-making. The methodology of life cycle assessment can be used as a tool for all future sustainable decision-making processes. It is therefore a sensible investment in a sustainable future and a concrete foundation on which you can build - together with us!

Frequently asked questions about
Life cycle assessment (LCA)

What is a life cycle assessment (LCA) and what environmental impacts are considered?

An LCA analyzes the entire environmental impact of a product or service along its entire life cycle - from raw material extraction, production and use to end-of-life. In addition to CO₂ emissions, it considers other environmental aspects such as water consumption, acidification and eutrophication.

What standards are used for an LCA?

The most important standard is ISO 14040/14044, which describes the methodology for data collection, assessment and interpretation of environmental impacts. For specific applications, there are supplementary standards such as ISO 14067 (carbon footprint) or EN 15804 (construction products).

How does an LCA differ from a PCF?

While a PCF only considers the climate impact (CO₂ equivalents), an LCA analyzes a variety of environmental aspects, including water scarcity, ozone depletion or toxicity. An LCA is therefore more comprehensive and offers a holistic environmental assessment.

What data is required for an LCA?

An LCA requires detailed input and output data from the entire supply chain, e.g. energy consumption, use of raw materials, production processes, transportation, use and disposal. Databases such as ecoinvent, GaBi or ELCD help with modeling.

How are life cycle analysis (LCA) and ISO standards related?

ISO 14040 and 14044 form the basis for the preparation of life cycle assessments. They serve as the basis for other standards such as ISO 14067 (carbon footprint of products) and support companies in quantifying and assessing their environmental impact.

What are the regulatory requirements for carrying out an LCA?

In addition to ISO 14040/14044, there are specific requirements in the EU such as EN 15804 for construction products or the requirements of the EU taxonomy. Companies often have to submit a verifiable environmental assessment through an LCA for sustainable financing.
