Stationary combustion refers to emissions resulting from the burning of fuels in stationary facilities. These include boilers, furnaces, gas turbines, and emergency power generators.
According to the GHG Protocol, all greenhouse gas emissions resulting from stationary combustion in facilities owned or controlled by a company fall under subcategory Scope 1.01. Typical gases include CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O, which are produced by the combustion of fossil fuels.
Stationary combustion is one of the largest sources of direct emissions at many companies. In the EU, for example, it is partially subject to the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and is therefore not only a climate issue but also a cost factor.
Companies track fuel consumption (gas, oil, coal, biomass) and convert these figures into CO₂e using emission factors. Modern systems are increasingly tracking emissions digitally through energy management systems. Measures range from fuel switches (e.g., natural gas → biogas) to efficiency improvements, electrification, and waste heat recovery.
