Validation of Carbon Footprints and Climate Goals

Validating Carbon Footprints and Climate Goals – Independent, Audit-Ready, and Strategically Sound

Companies are increasingly under scrutiny: from investors, customers, regulators, and, not least, their own workforce. Climate data and climate targets form the foundation for this—yet there is often uncertainty as to whether these assessments and targets are technically sound, comprehensive, and realistic.

With our Carbon Footprint & Climate Target Validation service, we provide clarity: methodologically sound, independent, and focused on your strategic development.

Who our validation is particularly relevant for

Our validation services are designed for companies of all sizes—from medium-sized manufacturing firms to organizations with an international presence. They are particularly helpful if you:

  • have calculated their carbon footprint and want to verify its accuracy before reporting or publication,
  • want to set or update a climate target (e.g., SBTi),
  • need audit-ready figures for ESG or sustainability reports,
  • refine or realign an existing climate strategy,
  • want to identify risks in communication or in achieving goals at an early stage,
  • want an unbiased, independent assessment of your climate data.

No matter where you are right now—we’ll help you build a solid, transparent foundation for your climate action.

Our approach to resolving uncertainties

Our approach is deliberately focused, efficient, and transparent:

1. Brief Intake

We review your existing documentation: carbon footprint, objectives, assumptions, methodology, and relevant internal documents.

2. Analytical Testing & Target Validation

We review data quality, completeness, scope definitions, and target paths. In doing so, we also assess operational feasibility and compliance with standards.

3. Results Report & Discussion

You will receive a structured analysis with clear recommendations, ranging from plausibility checks to target path analysis. If desired, we can discuss the results in more detail during a review call and define the next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions About
: Validation of Carbon Footprints and Climate Targets

Does climate target validation still make sense even if we haven’t submitted an SBTi target yet?

Yes, especially then. Early validation helps define realistic goals, avoid misconceptions, and prevent the need for later adjustments or rejections in the SBTi process. It provides a solid basis for decision-making before a commitment is made public.

How time-consuming is the validation of carbon footprints or SBTi climate targets for our internal team?

We’ve deliberately kept the process streamlined. Typically, we’ll need your existing financial statements, defined objectives, and a few brief clarifications to help us understand the context. The analysis is largely conducted externally, so your team is only involved on an as-needed basis.

Can we also use the results of a CCF validation for ESG reporting or external communications?

Yes. Validation strengthens the credibility of your statements to stakeholders, banks, customers, or auditors. It provides a solid foundation for ESG reporting, sustainability communications, and strategic decisions.

What are the SBTi's requirements for companies?

Companies must set specific emissions reduction targets for Scope 1, 2, and 3 that are consistent with the IPCC’s 1.5°C scenario. This includes short-term reduction targets for 2030 and long-term net-zero targets for 2050. Progress must be regularly reviewed and disclosed in sustainability reports.

How often should companies review their climate goals?

Companies should review their climate goals at least every two years and adjust them in light of new scientific findings or regulatory requirements. Changes in business operations, such as mergers or shifts in supply chains, also require a realignment of the climate strategy. Regular progress tracking ensures that set goals are actually achieved.
